Dr. Brian Cluer

Senior River Scientist, Geomorphologist

Brian Cluer is an Idaho native. He grew up farming in a rural community on the Camas Prairie, between Boise and Sun Valley. Following a drought, his family sold the farm and Brian pivoted from a farming career to college where he discovered geology, then hydrology, and finally geomorphology which has been his path ever since.

Brian received his Bachelor’s degree in geology from Idaho State University, Master’s in Geophysics and Groundwater from Northern Arizona University, and his PhD in earth resources from Colorado State University, emphasizing sediment transport and fluvial geomorphology.

Brian is regarded as a leader in river restoration science and practice as has won national awards for leadership and innovation in restoration science. He’s passionate about reconnecting floodplains and lives part-time in Stanley Idaho.
